IDEA Grants

Ongoing Support for Black-Led Nonprofits in Frederick

The Frederick Funders Data Project revealed that only a small portion of local grants historically supported specific demographic communities. In response, the Ausherman Family Foundation established the IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity Aligned) Grants Committee—an ongoing effort to strengthen and sustain Black-led nonprofits in Frederick County.

Information about IDEA Grants

About the IDEA Grants Committee

The IDEA Committee continues to work directly with Black-led nonprofits to better understand their needs and provide meaningful, long-term support. This includes:

  • Grant funding
  • Capacity building
  • Ongoing coaching
  • Mentorship
  • Networking opportunities with other nonprofit leaders to foster collaboration and shared learning

Our Goals

Through IDEA Grants, we aim to:

  • Strengthen the growth, sustainability, and community impact of Black-led nonprofits
  • Foster a supportive network among these organizations
  • Promote equity-focused capacity building that can be replicated across the nonprofit sector

Why We Do This

At AFF, equity means ensuring fair access to resources and opportunities. IDEA Grants reflect our commitment to:

  • Elevating voices that are often underrepresented in philanthropy
  • Sharing our knowledge and tools to support local leaders
  • Addressing historical underinvestment in Black-led organizations by committing funding and long-term support

By supporting nonprofits led by Black board members, executive directors, and senior staff, we aim to build lasting economic and social power in communities of color.
