How To Give Back Locally

Through COVID-19, many people are interested in giving back directly to their local community. There are several opportunities to donate or volunteer in your neighborhood through food banks, churches, drop off locations, and more. Please see the list below for a sampling of places to donate.

Ways To Give Back This Holiday Season

The holidays look a little different this year, especially for families facing hardships brought on due to COVID. During this season of giving, please consider donating food or other important items to help spread a little holiday cheer during these challenging times.

Donations

The Frederick Rescue Mission

  • Make a Holiday Donation here
  • Adopt A Resident Program –  Participate in our annual Adopt-a-Resident program to bless the men in the Changed Life Recovery Program and the women & children of Faith House this Christmas! For details, please contact Carolyn Chandler at gro.noissimeucsereht@reldnahcc or 301-695-6633 x221

The Salvation Army

  • The Red Kettle Challenge offers a new twist to the traditional Red Kettles seen at Christmas to raise funds for those in need in Frederick. With more people facing hardship this year, the need to serve those most vulnerable is greater than ever. Our ability to raise vital funds to serve those in need this Christmas and beyond is at risk due to the impact of COVID-19.  To help meet the increased need, we’re making it safer and simpler than ever for people to donate to The Salvation Army. The amount we raise with Kettles will directly affect how many families we can serve throughout the coming year. Help us bring hope to individuals and families who are struggling. We need individuals, companies, schools and churches to accept the challenge of having their own online Red Kettle – then make plans to raise $1,000 with their kettle.
  • 1 Kettle + 1 Team = 1 Family’s Life Changed

Heartly House

  • Donations are being collected for clients in need and can be dropped off at Common Market locations. Learn more about items needed here
  • Giant Food Community Bag & Giving Tag Program – For the month of December, Heartly House will receive a $1 donation from each purchase of the $2.50 reusable Community Bag at the Giant Food store located at 5316 New Design Rd, Frederick MD.

The Religious Coalition

  • Christmas Assistance Program – Details to come!
  • Adopt-A-Night Angel – You can sponsor the Alan P. Linton, Jr., Emergency Shelter’s 80 beds for a night, a week or a month. A sponsorship of $800 a night (just $10 per bed) helps to support the important, life-saving services it provides to homeless adults.

Federated Charities

  • The Mitten Project invites the community to reach out in kindness during the cold, winter months. Participate in giving away hundreds of pairs of mittens (plus scarves, gloves, jackets and socks) to anyone who needs them.
  • Through New Year’s Day, mittens are available on the fence, no questions asked. If you have an extra pair, share it and if you need a pair, take one.
  • Mitten collection starts anytime you drop off a pair at 22 South Market Street or request a collection box for your workplace!
