South End Park in Frederick is at the heart of a growing, youth-centered campus that includes the Boys & Girls Clubs of Frederick County and the future Frederick Youth Center at 300 Scotty’s Bus Lane. Working in partnership with the City of Frederick, the Ausherman Family Foundation is advancing a broader vision for the park and surrounding area, with early planning and design support from Fox & Associates and Mahan Rykiel Associates.
The City of Frederick replaced the park’s playground equipment in 2023, providing an important early investment in the space. As the primary user of South End Park, Boys & Girls Clubs of Frederick County incorporates the park into its regular programming for its youth. The revitalized pavilion provides these young people with a shaded outdoor space to gather, play, and participate in programming for years to come. Building on those improvements and the larger vision for the South End youth campus, the Foundation identified the pavilion as another opportunity to enhance the park for youth, families, and the surrounding community.
The pavilion’s concrete base, roof, benches, and other features needed repairs and revitalization. The Foundation’s Community Projects Committee helped coordinate local efforts to give the well-used gathering space new life.
With assistance from the Frederick County Building Industry Association and Wohlsen Construction, local contractors and businesses stepped forward to contribute the professional expertise, materials, and labor needed to complete the renovation. Partners included Global Ace, Tammal Enterprises, H. Frank Foland & Sons, ECS Mid-Atlantic, De Leon Painting, PJ’s Roofing, and others who helped bring the project across the finish line.
We’re proud to recognize that, through our partners’ generosity, 100% of the pavilion renovation was completed with donated services, labor, and materials.
The completed pavilion was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting at South End Park on September 21, bringing together project partners, community members, and local youth to recognize the many contributions that made the renovation possible.
The pavilion renovation is a strong example of public-private partnership in action. By bringing together the City, local businesses, community organizations, and philanthropy around a shared vision, the project enhanced an existing community space while demonstrating what can be accomplished through collective action.
The revitalized pavilion is an early, visible investment in the larger Frederick Youth Campus as well as a reflection of a community coming together to ensure Frederick’s young people have safe, welcoming places to gather, play, and connect.
