General Grants

General grants are awarded to help cover both operating or program costs. Operating costs include the fixed and variable expenses of the organization. Program costs include expenses associated with providing services associated with the organization’s mission.


General Grants with a Challenge Matching Funds Component

General Grants with a Challenge Matching Funds Component are awarded to help cover both operating or program costs, which are defined above. The grants require that matching funds be raised before AFF funds are distributed.

The challenge matching funds goal is to lead others to give by encouraging board members, staff members, and to tease out new contributors and contributions to the organization.

Organizations may have a limited time in which to raise matching funds as well as a limited funding pool e.g. in-kind, pledges, and government funding cannot count toward matching funds. Trustees will set the matching funds parameters. Different match criteria may apply to different grant awards.
